Rhineland-Palatinate fostered its position as a leading biotech location. The Life Science Zentrum Mainz (LZM) connects science, start-ups, and industry through its business units BioVation RLP and [LiSci]RLP, creating measurable momentum for innovation, growth, and investment across the region – and a growing pipeline of opportunities for venture capital investors.

BioVation RLP was launched in February 2024 as a business unit of LZM, commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Tourism, Energy, and Climate Protection of Rhineland-Palatinate. Its goals: to make the region’s biotech ecosystem visible and accessible, to strengthen collaboration, and build to lasting partnerships. At its heart, it‘s about matchmaking: bringing venture capital investors together with the region’s most promising biotech start-ups, and connecting corporates, research institutions, and public stakeholders so innovation moves faster from idea to application. Through strategic workshops, company interviews, and sounding boards, BioVation RLP identified the industry’s real needs directly from the people building it. One networking event alone sparked the idea for a shared scale-up facility, now run jointly by several companies – a concrete example of what structured matchmaking can produce. For investors, that translates into earlier access to emerging technologies, entrepreneurial talent, and a growing deal pipeline within a dynamic life sciences ecosystem. BioVation RLP is not a service provider – it is an active co-creator, close to industry, connected to science, and embedded in the structures of the state.

Where investors meet start-ups

One place where that matchmaking becomes visible is the Life Science Stage – a pitch series for life sciences and biotech start-ups, organised together with Forum Kiedrich as part of the Mainzer FoundersForum, with BioVation RLP as a partner. On 29 October 2026, the fourth edition brings together start-ups, investors, business angels, and leaders from industry, science, and politics at the Kurfürstliches Schloss Mainz. Around 30 start-up pitches, talks by successful entrepreneurs, and countless opportunities for personal exchange make it the place where the region‘s biotech ecosystem becomes tangible for capital. A similar spirit drives our event ‘Cross Day 26’: around 200 innovators from life sciences companies, science, and other industries exchange ideas and develop collaborative innovations across sectors and disciplines.

From lab to company

BioVation RLP and [LiSci]RLP are both run by LZM – one builds the network, the other builds the companies. With [LiSci]RLP, LZM operates Rhineland-Palatinate’s first life sciences incubator, and one of the region’s most effective start-up programmes. Since 2024, 15 teams have gone through the twelve-month incubator programme, with the fourth cohort launching in April 2026. Coaching, mentoring, workshops, and targeted networking formats help selected teams turn scientific ideas into market-ready innovations faster, and anchor them in the region long-term, supported by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Economic Affairs. For investors, that means an early, structured view of promising ventures before they reach the wider market.

A broader mandate

Matchmaking and investment are only part of the picture. Working from five strategic fields, BioVation RLP also drives cross-innovation, connecting expertise across industry boundaries; talent development, addressing the region’s skilled-labour shortage with tailored recommendations; bioeconomy, unlocking sustainable value creation; strategic alliances, strengthening cross-regional partnerships; and location marketing, putting Rhineland-Palatinate on the map across Europe. Together, they show a network that is about far more than a single deal.
